Burning Man in Black Rock City: the accommodation problem

When it runs: 29 August to 6 September 2027, in Black Rock City, Nevada. The 2027 theme is Spellbound

Burning Man is an unusual entry in this list, because the event itself has no rentals at all. Black Rock City is built from nothing in the Black Rock Desert every year and taken down again afterwards, and everyone there is camping, in a tent, an RV or a shade structure they brought.

The accommodation problem is Reno. It is the nearest city with an airport, supermarkets, hardware stores and rental trucks, so most people coming from further away fly in, stay a night or two to shop and pack, drive out, and come back to Reno on the way home. The nights before the gates open and the nights after the event ends are when the city's hotels and rentals fill and the prices climb.

Set an alert for Burning Man

Pick your nights and we open a new alert with the search area around Reno and the dates already filled in. You can still move the map, change the dates or add filters like price and guests before you save it.

Two windows, and they behave differently

Before the burn, demand builds over the days before the gates open on Sunday 29 August 2027. People arrive, collect a rental car or RV, shop for a week in the desert and try to sleep before the drive. That is the window most people plan for, and it books first.

After the burn, the timing is much less predictable. Leaving Black Rock City, known as Exodus, is a queue of vehicles on one road out, and it can take many hours. Burning Man's own guidance for its bus service is to allow about four hours from the city to Reno, and to allow extra time before a flight. People who planned to fly home the same day often end up needing a bed in Reno that night instead, which is exactly when a cancellation or a late listing is worth knowing about.

The event ends on Labor Day, Monday 6 September, which adds holiday weekend demand on top.

    How far it actually is

Black Rock City is a long way from Reno. Burning Man's own estimate for its bus is two to three hours from Reno to Gerlach, the last small town before the playa, and one to two hours more from there into the city, with longer times on the busiest arrival days. Driving yourself is in the same range.

Gerlach and the places along the road have very little to rent, so they are not a realistic search. Reno and Sparks, next to each other and close to the airport, are where the supply is. That is what the alert we set up covers.

What to set the alert for

Pick the windows that match your plans rather than one long stay. A two night search before the gates open and a two night search after the event ends will each find more than a single search spanning the whole week, because most hosts are not offering their place for the nine days you are in the desert.

Tickets for 2027 had not gone on sale at the time of writing, and sale dates and prices had not been announced. Plans firm up and fall apart around those sales, and the rentals booked by people who did not get a ticket come back onto the market.

    Burning Man accommodation questions

    When is Burning Man 2027?

Sunday 29 August to Monday 6 September 2027, Labor Day, in Black Rock City in the Nevada desert. The theme is Spellbound.

Can I book an Airbnb at Burning Man?

No. Black Rock City is a temporary city in the desert and everyone camps there. The rentals that matter are in Reno, for the nights before you drive out and after you come back.

How long does it take to get from Reno to Burning Man?

Several hours. Burning Man estimates two to three hours by bus from Reno to Gerlach and one to two hours more into Black Rock City, with longer times on the busiest days. Allow about four hours or more for the way back.

Should I book a night in Reno after Burning Man?

It is worth it if you are flying out. Leaving the event can take many hours, and a flight on the same day as Exodus is easy to miss. If you did not book one, an alert on Reno for that night is how you find a place that opens up late.
