Airbnb sold out for Punk Rock Holiday?

A ticket comes with tent camping at Sotočje, free for ticket holders from the Tuesday, and most people are there in a tent by the river. It is genuinely a good campsite and nobody should feel talked out of it.

What sells out is the other thing. Groups who have done a few of these eventually want a real bed, a kitchen, and a table outside where you can sit with a beer without somebody's guy ropes in your face. Everyone who thinks that way wants the same handful of apartments, and by our count there are around thirty in the village at all.

That is the whole dynamic. It is not a big market that fills up, it is a tiny market that was never going to fit the demand. Which means searching harder does nothing, and the only thing that ever opens is a cancellation.

The second thing that makes this harder than the festival alone would suggest: you are not only competing with other people going to Punk Rock Holiday.

The Soča valley is a summer destination in its own right, and August is its peak. Rafting, kayaking, hiking and the river itself pull people to Tolmin, Kobarid and Bovec regardless of what is on at Sotočje. Those visitors book earlier, stay longer and are not watching a festival lineup announcement.

So the apartments in the village are not sitting empty waiting for punks to claim them. They were largely taken before the festival crowd started looking, which is why the market can look picked clean surprisingly early.

If Tolmin itself has nothing, the valley does have other bases, and they are close enough to be real options rather than consolation prizes. Most na Soči is the nearest, and Kobarid and Bovec sit further up the valley. Idrija and Nova Gorica are further out again but have more ordinary accommodation stock.

The trade is transport. This is a rural valley, so plan how you are getting back at night before you book something twenty minutes away by car and then discover the group has one driver.

The practical setup is the same one that worked for us: one tight search on Tolmin village for the thing you actually want, and a second, wider one down the valley so you have something confirmed while you wait. Two searches is what Basic covers, and Pro gives you three.

Set the watch early and leave it running. Groups form, split and re-form for a festival like this, and every one of those changes releases a booking somewhere. Those releases keep coming right up to the week itself.

Be careful with the stay length. Camping opens well before the first band and a lot of hosts set week-long minimums across the festival, so a three-night search can return an empty map while five-night listings sit there unbooked. If your search shows nothing at all, lengthen it before you conclude the village is full.

And be realistic about what an alert is for. It cannot conjure an apartment in a village that has thirty of them. What it does is make sure that when one of the thirty comes back, you are not finding out about it by chance at two in the morning like we did.
